Here are some questions to ask yourself about your main character.
- What does your character look like?
- What is your character’s greatest fault?
- What is your character’s greatest asset?
- How would a stranger describe your character?
- What annoys your character?
- When was your character born?
- Did something significant happen during your characters birth/early life?
- Who are your characters close friends?
- Does your character wish that he/she could change something about himself/herself?
- Does your character have a sibling/siblings? If so, describe them.
- What does your characters bedroom look like? Include a few sentimental things.
- Does your character share a room with someone else?
- Does your character have a favorite place to be in? Describe it.
- Does you character have a job/goes to school?
- What is their job/school like?
- What is something that your character hates to do?
- What is something that your character loves to do?
I used these questions for a character in a story I will soon begin to write. They work well! Even if it is tedious to answer them all.
Now for some of my favorite quotes. Here is one by the author Madeline L’engle.
“A book too, can be a star, a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe.”
Here is another one by Madeline:
“Don’t try to comprehend with your mind, your minds are very limited. Use your intuition.”
That quote was from A Wrinkle in Time. Here is one by Albert Einstein.
“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and all science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt with awe, is as good as dead: his eyes are closed.”
A final quote by L’engle:
“Maybe you have to know the darkness before you can appreciate the light. ”
I love that one. It just sent another story idea swirling into my mind.
Thank you for reading this, my next article will be on writing horse stories.
